“The truth is, the majority of people are very
reasonable. They don’t write letters when
something offends them on TV. ‘Cause
reasonable people know that
And not only that, reasonable people
-Bill Hicks 1993

Quoted from Love All The People

Bill’s comments on life

“The world is like a ride in an amusement park.
And when you choose to go on it you think it’s real because that’s how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it’s very brightly colored and it’s very loud and it’s fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: ‘Is this real, or is this just a ride?’ And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, ‘Hey, don’t worry, don’t be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride.’ And we kill those people.”

And, from HEAVEN, we have this news report:

“Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imaginations of ourselves. Here’s Tom with
the weather.”

Halloween What It Is From A Christian Perspective
By Mrs. Gloria Phillips
Bay View Church
P.O. Box 9277
Mobile, AL 36691

“The uninformed Christian has no idea that there truly
are demonic spirits which are contacted and activated
as people call out to them in jest or in seriousness.
Every act around Halloween is in honor of false gods,
which are spirits in the realm of the Satanic. Those who
have been deeply involved in witchcraft and who are now
free, declare that even those who say they worship spirits
of nature are in actuality contacting the Satanic realm
without knowing it.

“To pray for the dead is against scripture. If one knows
Jesus before death, their spirit is already with the Lord.
Paul says to be absent from the body is to be at home
with the Lord, II Corinthians 5:6. If one is an unbeliever
at death, the scripture says there is no second chance as
it is appointed unto man once to die and after that the
judgment. Therefore, prayer for the dead is in opposition
to God’s Word and a pagan practice that became
“Christianized”. While living, one must make a choice “for”
or “against” Jesus and that determines the destination at
death of the spirit. No amount of prayer can reverse the
decision made on earth by the person concerned while
they were alive.

“The Bible instructs us to have nothing to do with the
deeds of darkness. Both Christian and Jew are forbidden
to participate in the occult practices listed in
Deuteronomy 18:10.
Necromancing is the delving into
ontacting the dead. God said all such practice was an
abomination to Him. Some may reply, “But we only
do this in fun…we don’t practice witchcraft.” That
which represents Satan and his domain cannot be
handled or emulated “for fun”. Such participation
places you in enemy and forbidden territory and
that is dangerous ground.

“Through the ages, Halloween has gone by various
names but all have been tributes to the same dark
force, Satan. There is no place in the life of the
Church or the Christian for such participation.”

P.P.S. Rhetoric had been seen as the art of
persuasive speaking.

A transcript of a speech could be used analyzed
as text. Wilcheln takes for granted our interest in
the speech-giver, “Nine-tenths of so-called literary
criticism deals with the lives and personalities of
authors, and for the obvious reason, that everyone
is interested in them, whereas few will follow a
technical study, however broadly based.”
Neither this perspective nor fact remained true.

Lloyd Bitzer’s “The Rhetorical Situation” examines
the context of a persuasive situation and broadens
the inquiry from the individual speaking to the context
and exigence, the situation calling forth the attempt to
persuade. Delving beyond the mind of the rhetor, we
see importance of the scenario, the situation that
created a need for rhetoric. Who is involved in the
exigence and what roles do they play? The relationships
have an increased importance, especially the differences
in power, between the persons involved. Location can
impact the speech and have meaning and impact. How
does the speaker choose to address the audience?
These elements can not be found by studying the text
or the personalities of those giving the speech. However,
this analysis is limited to spoken speeches, texts as live
performances only.

The technical study of rhetoric expanded with the
neoclassical movement. Richard Fulkerson discusses
Aristotelian forms in “The Public Letter as a Rhetorical
Form: Structure, Logic, and Style in King’s Letter From
Birmingham Jail,” but he also conducts word counts and
explores the many choices made, including speaking from
the page, where a public speech is guised as a private letter.

What opened up 25 years after Wicheln was a wide
variety of approaches to rhetorical criticism, specialized
tools like narrative analysis and genre analysis that brought
about fascinating insights and had its own slants.

Can we see a Topoi emerge? Is there a pattern to how the
public is communicated with? Can there be value to a genre
analysis, ignoring the specific speakers and looking at a wide
range of texts and how subjects are regularly treated by mass
media? Yes. A nasty pattern is described in Robert L. Ivie’s
“Images of Savagery in American Justifications of War” where
the purpose is to instill or deepen a sense of righteousness of
the readers and viewers of rhetorical texts: “Warfare is
characterized as a means of last resort, a necessary evil forced
upon a reluctant nation by the aggressive acts of an enemy bent
upon the alienation of humankind from their liberties.” By identifying
patterns of communication across rhetors we see a larger
mechanism of persuasion.

Traditionally, rhetoric was the study of
persuasive speeches, then persuasive texts,
where minds were changed. The Post-modern
approach to rhetoric allows for broader interpretations
of persuasion. What if the purpose of
persuasion is not to change minds but to entrench?
Richard Campbell gives
example to this end in “Securing the Middle Ground: Reporter
Formulas in 60 Minutes.” Rhetoric becomes a tool to sculpt the
way the larger audiences sees itself, the myth building element
of society. “I define myths not as the apocryphal stories associated
with earlier cultures but as vital contemporary creators of
meaning and value.” Campbell is suggesting that 60 Minutes
while presenting itself as provocative is actually reinforcing
the status quo.

Radical departure from Wicheln’s
speaker-centric interest is
Michael C. McGee as depicted in his “Text, Context and
Fragmentation of Contemporary Culture.” This is the technical
study Wicheln said few would follow. McGee is describing a
phenomena where a fragment of a text appears to become
more important that the whole speech, more important than
the person who said the phrase…the fragment takes on a life
of its own ostensibly separate from the original text or speaker.

What McGee does share with Wicheln is that rhetoric tends to
be an action, a verb, and is not well
represented when we look
too closely at a methodological analysis of a text.
